A whole lesson fits in ten kilobytes.

That is the difference between a child who keeps learning through a drought, a displacement or a missed school fee — and one who does not. iFunza Foundation puts personalised tutoring on the phone families already own, in the places the market will not yet reach.

I don't get question 4. Fractions. 16:02
No problem, Wanjiru. Let's take it slowly. If a pizza is cut into 8 slices and you eat 3, what fraction is left? 16:02
5/8? 16:03
Exactly right. Now the same idea with question 4 — the denominator never changes when you subtract. Try it. 16:03
Got it — 7/12. Asante! 🎉 16:05

Our mandate

One purpose, written into the trust deed

iFunza Foundation exists solely to advance education in Kenya — with priority given to learners in government schools and low-income households. It runs no commercial activity of its own.

Reach the excluded

We work where commercial returns are insufficient: rural and arid counties, refugee and displacement settings, and households where one economic shock ends a child's schooling.

Protect the mission

The Foundation contracts the technology it needs from iFunza Technologies Limited at arm's length, on documented cost-recovery terms. Mission decisions sit with the Foundation's own board.

Account for every shilling

Restricted grants are held in dedicated accounts and cost centres, never commingled with commercial operations, and audited each year by an independent firm.

What we have built so far

Eighteen months of measured delivery

Every school joined by word of mouth. There has been no paid acquisition.

33,000+ Learners reached Across Kenya since 2020
82+ Partner schools Government and low-fee private
+34% Reading comprehension 42% → 76%, Uwezo tool, n=2,847
94% Monthly retention 7-day average learning streaks
How to read these numbers. They come from internal pilot measurement, not independent evaluation. Commissioning an external RCT or quasi-experimental study is the single largest line in our current funding request — because we would rather be checked than believed.

The platform behind the programmes

Built by iFunza. Deployed for public good.

The Foundation does not build software. It funds and directs the delivery of two proven iFunza products into schools and communities that could not otherwise afford them.

Why the fee product sits alongside the tutor. Fee non-payment, not lack of interest, is the leading driver of crisis-era dropout in Kenya. Financing continuity is learning continuity — so we treat them as one system rather than two programmes.
